Tonight’s poem is Ancient Wisdom by Tita Lacambra Ayala. It so happens that Tita’s poems are right smack in the middle of A Native Clearing so I almost always get to choose one from her section. But she’s also nice to read, so there’s that.
Ancient Wisdom seems wholly appropriate for the day. The Hague just released its ruling on the West Philippine Sea. What the Philippine government will do about it, that’s still up in the air. This present administration seems more accommodating to Chinese interests, but that, perhaps is due to its new utilitarian philosophy. Citizens, of course, are expected to shut up.
Tita’s poem speaks for the disenfranchised. I don’t quite know if she originally intended for it to speak to women or more generally to people outside the circles of power, but that’s how I feel right now. Then again, the poem does end on a more hopeful note. We endure.
