I am currently on a World War I kick. It started with my review of Dan Carlin’s Blueprint for Armageddon of which I am now on the second part. Carlin is engrossing but he can take time to develop his story so I’ve succumbed to spoilers and watched an abbreviated version presented by Epic TV.
I also picked up Erich Maria Remarque’s All Quiet on the Western Front. (I was thinking of buying the book and then I realized I already had it on my bookshelf.) In the first chapter, the narrator talks with unalloyed joy about a simple meal of beans and sausages as if it were a feast. It’s heart-wrenching.
