144: Darth Vader

img_20160523_212958-01.jpegFor facilitating the Art of Poetry MOOC workshop, the library gave me a couple of gift certificates, so guess what I bought? I knew the Star Wars Rebels toys were marked down but I didn’t feel compelled enough to buy one until I saw Darth Vader on the shelf. It was the only one left among the other stormtroopers and Ezra Bridgers. It was also heavily marked down from its original price. So, cue the heavy mechanical emphysema.

The Star Wars prequels don’t get much love these days but at the time they came out I enjoyed them well enough. Or perhaps I am just remembering them with Force-tinted glasses. Anyway, I always thought the prequels plus the original trilogy gave a compelling story of the fall and redemption of Darth Vader. Without the prequels, it was simply Luke Skywalker’s story; but with the prequels, it became the story of Anakin Skywalker. Through this lens, Darth Vader becomes a much more tragic figure.
