020: The Bet

“Can I take your picture?” I asked. It was simply too good a chance to pass up.

“Sure!” he said.

“What’s the matter? Did you lose a bet?”

“This is the bet! Someone dared me to wear this suit the whole day in school.”

“And how much was the bet?”

“One hundred pesos!”

“One hundred pesos?!”

“Yes, it’s for the principle of the thing.”

I like this guy!

If anyone needs a chill pill, it’s the university faculty. Classes are called off tomorrow so we could have a general faculty assembly. This general assembly has been a long time in the brewing. A big portion of the school community was not happy with the recent collective bargaining agreement. The calls had been growing for a meeting with the union leadership. Unfortunately, the union officers have been stonewalling. Just this afternoon, they finally released a letter setting the general assembly for February 26. This is not behavior I expect from university professors.

I have made it a goal this year to read through Ernest Hemingway’s short stories. This is after my reading of A Moveable Feast. Just that brief encounter has proven an antidote to my writing malaise, infected as I have been with shallow essays and insipid fiction. However, make the mistake of reading an analysis of The Short and Happy Life of Francis Macomber this morning, and I cheated myself of the joy of rumination and discovery. It will not happen again.

I spent some time with my thesis advisees. We looked over the framework program they were using. What a joy to work out the mechanics of code!
